In yesterday's posting, I mentioned the important role that intuition plays in finding these stones. Lest anyone scoff at this idea, they should read the CBC article "New 'Wendiceratops' named for legendary Alberta dinosaur hunter Wendy Sloboda."
Written by Emily Chung, the article talks about how Sloboda, a professional photographer, is credited with helping to discover thousands of fossils including many new species over the past thirty years. In the words of one paleontologist, she is "basically a legend in Alberta" and "probably one of the best dinosaur hunters in the world." He goes on to explain how she "runs around the badlands and finds all this cool stuff" and explains that "she just has a sixth sense for finding good specimens."
Sloboda adds that she looks for rocks sticking out of the dirt and recognizes fossils by their unusual colour, texture or shininess. Then she adds, "It's really hard to explain it." My thoughts exactly!
